The importance of song form.

What do I mean by well? I guess I feel a song needs to say something that makes the message stronger than if it had been prose or a piece of poetry. Something worth getting stuck in your ear. Don't waste good music on bad lyrics or vise versa.
I've been somewhat disappointed by a lot of songs being written lately because of their structure/song form. Or the lack of it.
Songs need structure. It's what keeps them from just becoming a long string of ideas. Modern song form uses different elements in building a story. (verse, chorus or refrain, bridge, pre-chorus, etc.) If you ever played with Legos you'll understand that each kind of element has a different function. Building a great song takes learning to understand what each element's function is and using their strengths to create a song that people will remember and come back to.
Next time maybe we can discuss ways to use the various elements in strengthening our songwriting. In the mean time, leave a comment or question concerning song form you'd like to discuss.
